Engaging for Good Environment in Kosovo

Throughout the years, the EU has contributed significantly in the energy sector in Kosovo, with the goal of promoting sustainable energy use and renewable energy sources. The #ForGood EnvironmentCampaign is a continuation of these efforts, working on many levels, including  direct support to families and work with children and young people, to promote a cultural and behaviour shift towards environmental protection.

In line with this, several activities have been organised, bringing together writers, children, civil society organisations and communities across Kosovo to help build a more environmentally and energy conscious future.

On the 16th of August, within the fourteenth edition of the EU supported Green Festival Mitrovica, which uses culture and art as a tool for educating and inspiring individuals, and communities to take action on climate change and work towards a more sustainable future, we organised a reading of the Planet Defenders book series published earlier this year and donated around 50 volumes of the series.

Moving on to September, marking the beginning of the school year for children and the celebration of the World Clean Up Day (20 September), we were in overdrive to ensure that good energy reaches all over Kosovo.

Throughout September, we implemented the “Composting Champions” workshop series organised in collaboration with local partners in Pristina and Mitrovica North, who share the same values when it comes to sustainability and the environment. The Composting Champions workshop in Pristina was organised in collaboration with Fondacioni Jeshil and took place at the Composting Centre in Pristina. The workshop provided 30 youngsters aged 12-16 with a hands-on learning experience on how to compost organic waste, through presentations and do-it-yourself activities, Participants received a broad understanding of waste separation and organic waste management through composting. Additionally, the campaign continued helping build and enhance knowledge of the community about organic waste management and environmental issues.

The “Composting Champions” moved to Mitrovica North, where we teamed up with PKC Akvarijus, bringing together over 20 children aged 8-12 fromMitrovica North to learn about composting, recycling, and sustainable living through interactive, hands-on activities. Participants connected with nature while discovering how composting helps reduce waste, supports biodiversity and promotes a zero-waste lifestyle. The workshop aimed to teach and inspire children to adopt eco-friendly habits and become environmental advocates by equipping them with practical knowledge on composting and waste reduction as well as empowering them to start their own composting journey and contribute to a greener future.

On the 20th of September, we joined Let’s Do it Kosovo, to celebrate World Clean Up Day, where along representatives from other member states, the EU ambassador in Kosovo, Mr. Aivo Orav, participated in the clean up of some of the main streets of Pristina.

The EU office in Kosovo remains committed to work closely with Kosovo partners to build a greener future for Kosovo. Look out for the upcoming activities within our For Good Environment campaign activities and join us in this valuable mission.
