Using Sports to Empower Youth and Fight Discrimination

By Bleta Rexhepi, PLAY International Kosovo

In Kosovo, young people face discrimination, social divisions, and radicalization risks. PLAY International Kosovo has long been dedicated to using sport as a tool for education, inclusion, and social change. With a strong track record of impactful projects, PLAY continues to innovate and adapt its methods to address pressing social challenges.

In July 2024, PLAY International Kosovo was joined by the EU in its efforts to utilise sports for education, inclusion and social change. The EU funded Sport 4 Inclusion project stands to prove how sport can be a powerful force in uniting communities, strengthening resilience, and empowering youth to build a more inclusive future.

Supported by the EU and thanks to the dedication of local partners, this project aims to transform the lives of young people in Kosovo, equipping them with the skills and confidence to challenge discrimination and champion social cohesion. As these young leaders take the next steps in their journeys, their efforts will continue to inspire change, ensuring that sport remains a powerful catalyst for inclusion in Kosovo.

Through sport-based activities that promote tolerance and social cohesion, the project will empower young people aged from 15 to 24 years. The project began with a three-month diagnostic study to identify key factors contributing to discrimination. Insights from research and expert analysis guided the development of a sports-based educational kit fostering resilience, open-mindedness, and critical thinking.

PLAY International Kosovo has already launched the call organised as part of activities within the EU funded Sport 4 Inclusion project and through which fifteen civil society organizations (CSOs) across nine municipalities are going to receive training in PLAY’s pedagogy, enabling them to lead sport-based activities against discrimination. Over 50 CSO members will train 200 young people (50% women) through weekly sessions combining sports, discussions, and debates to develop pro-social behaviours.

To expand impact, 50 young volunteers will be trained in project management and financial planning, allowing them to implement 10 youth-led community initiatives, benefiting over 600 people.

Through their leadership, sport continues to drive meaningful social change in Kosovo.
