In the heart of the village of Binçë/Binač, where local tradition has been passed down from generation to generation through work and coexistence, stands the Binçë/Binač Mill, renovated with EU support. This cultural heritage site speaks not only of the traditional way of living, but also of the joint memory of communities that have shared the same place and the same history.

The village of Binçë/Binač, Viti/Vitina Municipality, is home to one of the important cultural heritage sites of this area, the Binçë/Binač Mill. This water mill, about 150 years old and restored with the EU’s support, represents a testament to traditional life and the way local communities have functioned for generations. The building is a cultural heritage monument and, although it is not functional today, it preserves special historical, architectural and social values. The area where the mill is located is inhabited by Kosovo Albanian and Kosovo Serb communities, making this building not only a cultural asset but also a symbolic space of coexistence and shared memory.

According to Valmir Sahiti, Director of Culture in the Municipality of Viti/Vitina, the Binçë/Binač Mill is an important cultural heritage project for the municipality. He points out that the building has been restored with a significant investment by the European Union and that it is under government supervision. The mill was restored between December 2021 and June 2023 through the EU-funded Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Kosovo – North Macedonia, which supports the preservation of cultural heritage and sustainable local development across the border region. The restoration has included not only the building but also the surrounding area, with the aim of preserving its authenticity and historical values.

Although the mill is no longer operational, it continues to have an educational and cultural role, with students and other curious visitors coming to learn about the local cultural heritage and the history of the area.
The restoration of the Binçë/Binač Mill is a concrete example of commitment to the protection of cultural heritage and its inclusion in community life. Through the support of the European Union and cooperation with local institutions, this building has been preserved as a shared cultural asset and as part of the multiple identities of this area.
